Fortune telling has fascinated the world since the beginning of mankind. In fact, fortune telling has been practiced in Ancient Egypt, China, Babylonia and Chaldea since 4000 years before Christ. Prehistoric man used rituals for all types of magic, from foretelling the best times to plant crops to ancient rituals for the dead.
The Ancient Egyptians believed that magic was one of the forces used to create the world. Magic was carried out by Lector Priests who performed magical rites to protect their king.
The Chinese Horoscope has been used for more than 3000 years and today Fortune Cookies are still popular in Chinese Restaurants throughout America. There are stll popular methods of Chinese fortune telling such as face reading, palm reading (similar to Western Palmistry), Kau Cim, and Zi wei dou shu. Kau Cim is the practice of fortune telling with incense sticks and Zi wei dou shu involves a master of the Chinese Calender and Astrology.
Celtic Magic involved fortune telling with Rune Stones and symbols. Much of Western Europe was inhabited by the Celts and many practiced witchcraft. Celtic witches worshipped many deities, in particular the Earth Mother Goddess and the Horned God. Celtic Magic was also woven into jewellery and artwork.
During the Saxon years, some of the most prolific characters associated with magic are Merlin and King Arthur. King Arthur was the son of Uther Pendragon and heir to the throne. Due to the troubled times, Merlin advised that King Arthur should be raised secretly to protect him from enemies. Merlin used his magic to set a sword in a stone that only the rightful King of England could withdraw. Arthur withdrew this sword and became the rightful king.
Magic and fortune telling has continued to be used to foretell future events. Nostradamus prophesised many future events including World War II. Astrologers have been employed by Royalty and mediums have help many people contact the dead.
Magic today can vary between simple herbalism to elaborate spells. Astrology, palm reading and many other divination techniques are used throughout the world.
