Astrology
Astrology and astronomy were viewed as the same thing for thousands of years.
Nowadays the two are separate sciences where Astrology is based on predictions which relate to the position of the stars whereas astronomy is the science of the universe as a whole.
Western Astrology has a history which goes back to Babylonian times and was subsequently refined by the Ancient Greeks and Romans.
Astrology has been attacked by early Christians but after an 800 year decline astrology became popular once again.
It was during the 17th Century that astrology broke away from astronomy.
Astrology became increasingly popular during Elizabethan times. A famous astrologer of that era was John Dee. He was astrologer to both Queen Elizabeth I and her predecessor, Queen Mary.
Another famous astrologer was William Lilly who predicted the Great Fire of London.
Western Astrology is based on a monthly movement of the stars and is depicted by the twelve signs of the zodiac. The signs of the zodiac are Aries the Ram, Taurus the Bull, Gemini the Twins, Cancer the Crab, Leo the Lion, Virgo the Virgin, Libra the Scales, Scorpio the Scorpion, Sagittarius the Archer, Capricorn the Goat, Aquarius the Water Carrier and Pisces the Fish.
Chinese Astrology is based on a yearly lunar cycle and is depicted by animals. The animals are the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Cat, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Pig.
Western Astrology and Chinese Astrology are different diciplines and are not related in any way.
